About this session

Course EGI-FOT 101 combines 25 hours of live online theory with 19 hours of supervised laboratory work, course review, and the official FOA CFOT certification examination. The schedule uses daily morning and afternoon time blocks: 8:00 AM - 12:00 PM and 2:00 PM - 5:00 PM. Students study fiber fundamentals, cable construction, components, installation practices, testing, troubleshooting, safety, documentation, and standards before completing in-person lab work in cable preparation, fusion splicing, connector installation, OLTS testing, OTDR testing, and final documentation.

Schedule

Week 1: Live online theory

Five instructor-led theory sessions totaling 25 hours, covering the FOA curriculum sequence before students enter the lab.

Week 2: Laboratory and exam

Three seven-hour lab sessions total 19 lab hours, followed by course review and the official FOA CFOT examination.

Daily time blocks

08:00 – 12:00

Morning

Week 1 morning sessions are delivered live online by Zoom. Week 2 morning sessions are in-class lab and testing.

14:00 – 17:00

Afternoon

Afternoon sessions run during both weeks. Official contact hours remain the 46-hour CFOT syllabus total.

Week 1 topics

  • Day 1: Course orientation and fiber optic fundamentals
  • Day 2: Optical fibers and fiber optic cables
  • Day 3: Fiber optic components
  • Day 4: Fiber optic installation practices (ISP/OSP, documentation, budgets)
  • Day 5: Testing, troubleshooting, standards, and exam preparation

Week 2 labs

  • Lab Day 1: Cable preparation and fusion splicing
  • Lab Day 2: Fiber management, connector installation, and optical loss testing
  • Lab Day 3: OTDR testing, troubleshooting, review, and FOA examination

Is week one remote?

Yes. Week one is five live instructor-led Zoom theory sessions (25 hours). Morning and afternoon class options are offered as separate seats.

How is the lab week organized?

Week two includes three seven-hour in-person lab sessions (19 hours), plus course review and the official FOA CFOT examination. Students work in two-person teams with a maximum class size of 10.

Is prior fiber experience required?

No. Prior fiber optic experience is not required, though basic electricity, telecommunications, or networking knowledge is helpful.

Attendance and participation, laboratory performance, safe tool use, cable preparation, splicing, connector installation, optical testing and documentation, workmanship, teamwork, and the official FOA CFOT examination.
